As it's International Women's Day, I thought I'd share my thoughts on the controversial topic of women and weights. Here are my top 6 reasons why women shouldn't lift weights (please read all the way to the end, this is important information):
1. Lifting weights makes women too muscular
Come on, this is an obvious one. If you lift weights effectively (combined with proper nutrition and rest of course), you enhance your muscle mass! This is basic human biology. In women, who naturally have around ten times less testosterone in their bodies than men, this enhanced muscle mass (and the associated fat loss which comes with a higher metabolism) gives them a more 'toned' appearance. Which no women want, am I right?!
As an aside, if a woman really wants to bulk up and stack on a lot of muscle then it is definitely possible with a lot of hard work (it doesn't happen by accident), but how dare she do that and make millions of men feel so insecure about themselves! It's just not ladylike! And anyway, we all know that a woman's body is there to look the way outsiders want, not how she wants.
2. Lifting weights increases testosterone
Testosterone is for men, not women (even though women need testosterone in their body, I'll ignore this). Women shouldn't want more testosterone, as it could make them more assertive and less likely to do as they are told. Never mind the associated health benefits such as reduced risk of breast cancer or increased libido. You keep your estrogen and crying at romcoms thanks, leave the weights room for the blokes.
3. Lifting weights reduces stress
If you reduce your stress and anxiety, then what are you going to cry, whine and complain about all the time? Come on now ladies, being stressy is like your whole identity, don't lose that!
4. Women are the weaker sex
If you get strong from lifting weights, that upsets the whole natural balance. Men are supposed to be strong and women are supposed to be weak and just accept it. Weight training increases bone density, reducing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis. That's not weak! Don't go messing with nature by lifting weights. It scares men.
5. Do girly stuff like yoga for flexibility
Even if you don't like it. And even though weight training through a full range of motion is just as effective as stretching for improving flexibility. Yoga is for girls, weights is for guys, everyone knows that.
Men, if you're reading this, make sure you don't break free of gender stereotypes by going to yoga. Even though it's freaking awesome.
6. Women shouldn't challenge themselves
Doing things which challenge you releases dopamine in the brain, which is the motivation neurotransmitter. It makes you feel bulletproof, like you can do anything! It empowers you, and we all know what happens when women are empowered...
Women, unless you want all these horrible side-effects like a better physique, lower risk of osteoporosis and breast cancer, better mental health, better flexibility, increased libido, more strength, and a feeling of empowerment, then please PLEASE avoid lifting weights!
